What does your job involve?

Research, teaching, mentoring

How did you get to this job (education etc.)?

I began doing research as an undergraduate, then got my Ph.D. in Ecology & Evolution at the University of Michigan, did a postdoc at UC Irvine, and had another faculty position for 8 years at Barnard College, Columbia University before landing my current job

Do you feel being LGBT has affected your career decisions?

Yes – I did not accept an endowed position in the south last year because I was concerned about being queer in that region, even though it probably would have been better for my career

Have you had any reactions from colleagues about being LGBT, either good or bad?

Mostly good reactions

Did you have any role models growing up (LGBT, STEM, totally unrelated.)?

Not in STEM, but Ani Difranco had a big influence on me

What are your plans for the future?

To train some kick ass grad students and do some great research that contributes to environmental sustainability
