What does your job involve?

I develop material and teach as part of UBC’s Master of Data Science program, as well as two graduate level courses in exploratory data analysis.

How did you get to this job (education etc.)?

I got my PhD in Statistics in the winter of 2017. My draw within the discipline has always been towards the data science side of things.

Do you feel being LGBT has affected your career decisions?

I don’t think so.

Have you had any reactions from colleagues about being LGBT, either good or bad?

No, it’s been treated as totally normal.

Did you have any role models growing up (LGBT, STEM, totally unrelated.)?

I found Dr. Bill Ralph’s teaching and interaction with students to be inspiring, and I felt I could connect more with him since he also identifies as gay. He is largely the reason I ended up pursuing studies at UBC.

What are your plans for the future?

I’ll continue to develop and teach the field of data science, and help others apply data science. I’ll be focussing on modernizing statistical and distributional methods.
