LGBTQ+ STEM supports queer and trans identified researchers in STEM fields. Originally established in 2016 by Dr Beth Montague-Hellen, LGBTQ+ STEM founded a community for LGBTQ+ people in STEM. Since its onset, there has been an international surge in interest for LGBTQ+ inclusion in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and increasing evidence that there is need for action for LGBTQ+ people to reliably reach their potential. LGBTQ+ STEM started organically to bring people together for support and to show one another that we exist and thrive in science. Our mission it to create a stronger community and a better future for researchers through:

Community Building

We host regular events to bring together queer and trans STEM researchers. In particular, we host the LGBTQ+ STEMinar.

Advocacy

We advocate for policy change in STEM that creates a better environment for LGBTQ+ people to thrive in research in the UK.

Visibility

In this photo Clair Malone (she/her), physicist, member of the LGBTQ+ community, white disabled woman, is smiling, wearing a red dress, black leggings, and zebra print shoes, with shoulder length red hair, in her wheelchair, in the centre of a TED X red circle carpet, in front of a large TED X sign, with a grand piano in the background. On the piano, a white sign reads: Showing Up TED X London

We interview members of the LGBTQ+ STEM community to give examples of how people have navigated their careers.
